Sharia advocates should leave: Lambie

Supporters of sharia law should pack their bags and leave Australia, Palmer United Party senator Jacqui Lambie says.

Sharia influences the legal code in most Muslim countries and includes regulations to do with all aspects of Muslim life including daily routines, religious and family obligations, marriage and financial dealings.

But extremist groups such as Islamic State - which an international coalition is being formed to fight in Iraq - have become notorious for implementing hard-line aspects of sharia, including stonings and executions.

Senator Lambie said any Australian who supported sharia should not have the right to vote or get welfare payments.

"Anybody that is supporting or calling for sharia law in Australia should get out, simple as that," she told reporters in Hobart on Monday.

She said it was an "underlying problem" in Australian society.

"Unless we put our foot down on it now it will only become bigger and more dangerous," the Tasmanian senator said.
