Driver in hospital after truck plunges down embankment

A truck driver has been injured after his vehicle rolled off a highway in Victoria’s north, triggering lane closures.

It’s understood the vehicle lost control on the corner of the Goulburn Valley Highway and Hume Freeway in Seymour, plunging down an embankment, about 2.30pm.

The 50-year-old driver was rescued from the vehicle just after 3pm, suffering serious head and leg injuries.

He was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital by an air ambulance in a stable condition.

The truck was transporting boxes of frozen chickens at the time of the incident, with dozens of boxes spilling onto the road.

“There were chickens everywhere,” witness Ryan Smith-Procter said.

About 200 metres of cable from the barrier on the highway was also ripped away in the crash, blocking northbound lanes of the Hume Freeway at the Goulburn Valley Highway.

Police have said it’s lucky no other cars were involved in the smash.

Northbound lanes on the Goulburn Valley Highway have reopened but the speed limit is currently reduced.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are now underway.
