A middle-aged woman who was sexually assaulted and robbed at knife-point in the NSW northern tablelands hid in her car in fear until morning, police say.

After the 50-year-old was attacked and robbed about 11pm (AEDT) on Friday in central Glen Innes, she waited until dawn on Saturday to leave her car, go to a nearby home and call an ambulance.

Police said the offender, who stole property from the woman's bag after sexually assaulting her, was last seen running towards the New England Highway.
