While this afternoon briefly looked set for “storm-apocalypse” as two thunderstorms converged on Sydney before petering out, the city can look forward to a soaking tonight.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued urgent warnings this afternoon for Sydney, but this evening’s storm activity now appears to be confined to coastal areas. The Hunter region and northern NSW can expect wild winds and heavy rainfall.

Sydney did cop some hail today, with wind gusts reaching up to 95km/h in some parts of the inner west and outer suburbs.

Tonight is expected to bring a cooler change and rain.

The State Emergency Services has issued an urgent warning for NSW residents to be prepared as storm season hits the area.
