Severe thunderstorm warning issued for parts of Sydney and Wollongong with possibility of large hail and damaging wind

The BOM warning area as of 3pm.  

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the Sydney and Wollongong areas.

The thunderstorms, currently near Wollongong, are moving northeast.

They are forecast to affect Darkes Forest, Helensburgh and Stanwell Park by 3.35 pm and the Royal National Park, waters off the Royal National Park and Waterfall by 4.05 pm.

Large hailstones and damaging winds are likely, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The State Emergency Service advises that people in the affected area should:

* Move your car under cover or away from trees.

* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.

* Keep clear of fallen power lines.

* Unplug computers and appliances.

* Avoid using the phone during the storm.

* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.

* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.
