Two people struck by lightning as severe storms lash Sydney

Two women were struck by lightning as thunderstorms rolled over Sydney this afternoon.

One woman was struck by lightning about 5pm at St Marys, and the other was struck about 6pm in Newtown, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Both women were taken to hospital, with the former woman in a stable condition and the latter in a serious but stable condition.

NSW Ambulance also responded to numerous crashes during the afternoon of wild weather. 

The storm also cut power to 16,000 Ausgrid customers in Ashfield and Croydon, in the city’s inner west.

Video also captured hailstones falling in Campbelltown earlier this afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe storm warning for the cell, with rain and hail lashing other parts of NSW earlier today.

The warning has since been cancelled, but was issued for Sydney regions, including Penrith, Parramatta, Campbelltown and Katoomba and, more widely, parts of the Hunter, Illawarra and Central Tablelands districts.
