The bureaucrat put in charge of overhauling the way Australians interact with government is getting moving quickly, with his minister asking for a comprehensive strategic plan by the end of August.

The federal government has poached senior NSW public servant Martin Hoffman to run its new agency, Services Australia.

Government Services Minister Stuart Robert has asked him to spend the next six weeks developing a plan for how best to meet the coalition's promise to reform service delivery.

"Whether Australians are accessing government services digitally, in person or over the phone, in the future I want Services Australia to deliver a similar experience to what Australians are used to when dealing with everyday services, such as banking and shopping," Mr Robert said in a statement on Monday.

Mr Hoffman has led the NSW Department of Finance, Services and Innovation since August 2015.

Prior to that he held a range of roles in the commonwealth public service and private sector.
