Commuters in Sydney’s north west are facing significant delays this evening as police continue to investigate a crash that killed a woman and seriously injured a teenaged girl in Northmead.

Police said the woman was killed when the van she was in smashed head-on into a truck at the intersection of Windsor Road and Lombard Street in Northmead about 2.30pm.

The 17-year-old girl was briefly trapped inside the wreckage before being rushed to Westmead Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Crash investigators remain at the scene – which is normally a major thoroughfare for commuters heading out towards Sydney’s north-west suburbs.

Windsor Road remains closed tonight with motorists being diverted via nearby Hammers Road and Caroline Chisholm Drive.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area as police continue their investigations.

Police are still piecing together what occurred this afternoon but believe the two vehicles were travelling in opposing directions when they collided at high speed.
