Senate to investigate new corruption body

A Senate committee will investigate whether Australia needs a national corruption watchdog.
The inquiry, instigated by Palmer United's Zhenya Wang and independent senator John Madigan, will look at the adequacy of the existing framework for dealing with corruption, to report back in September.
The government opposed the inquiry, with frontbencher Scott Ryan insisting it already had a multi-faceted approach to combating corruption through the Commonwealth Ombudsman, Australian Federal Police and the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity.
