Senate to debate urgent detention bill

Fast-tracked legislation to close a possible legal loophole on funding for offshore immigration detention centres is an attempt to move the goal posts before a High Court ruling, the Greens say.

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young says the government with Labor backing is rushing the bill through the Senate on Thursday because it fears losing a legal challenge.

She has flagged moving amendments that would place time limits on detention, improve conditions for children, grant media access and legally require abuse allegations to be reported.
