Senate ref issues warning on sport scarves

The Senate umpire reserved a penalty but issued a slap on the wrist to the Greens after its upper house team wore Australian netball scarves into the chamber.

Excited after after the Australian Diamonds downed England in the World Championships in Sydney on Tuesday night, the minor party's senators sported celebratory green and gold scarves.

Senate President Stephen Parry warned the Greens team to "think about it" before dressing up in the chamber.

"Just so this doesn't escalate and we end up with people coming in on a Monday morning with their favourite football scarves on," he told the Senate on Wednesday.

Senator Parry previously has ruled against the wearing of mining company shirts and the display of trophies.

He refrained this time from making a definitive ruling on what senators could and could not wear.

"Let's just think about it before we do," he said.
