Senate probe in World Cup bid 'inevitable'

Independent senator Nick Xenophon says a Senate inquiry into Australia's failed 2022 World Cup bid is "almost inevitable" because there are too many unanswered questions.

He believes Australia can play a key role in cleaning up the game as allegations of corruption continue to rock football's governing body FIFA.

"I think a Senate inquiry will give us some very good answers as to what went wrong, whether there were appropriate governance and probity provisions in terms of the $42.25 million of taxpayers funds that were spent for the failed bid," he told reporters in Canberra.
