The Senate has called on the federal government to urgently remove barriers to HIV prevention drugs.

The upper house backed a Greens motion on Monday calling for the government to speed up approval of pre-exposure prophylaxis drugs by the medicine regulator.

The motion also calls for the government to increase trials for rapid HIV tests and home self-tests.
