Senate calls for retirement village rules

The Senate has urged the federal government to develop nationally-consistent regulation for retirement villages to deal with dodgy practices in the sector.

The Greens motion, which passed with the support of Labor and crossbenchers, noted last month's Fairfax Media report which said elderly and bedridden residents of a scandal-plagued Victorian village were set to lose their homes.

Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister James McGrath said the government was concerned with problems in the sector, but improved regulation was a matter for state and territory governments.

The government would wait for the outcome of a review before moving to plug regulatory gaps between state and federal laws, he said.
