Security chiefs to respond to asylum laws

Australia's border security chiefs and ministers are meeting in Canberra to discuss measures to ensure new laws don't undermine Operation Sovereign Borders.

Labor, the Greens and crossbenchers combined their votes on Tuesday to put in place a new system to provide easier access to medical transfers for asylum seekers in offshore detention, contrary to the government's wishes.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the government had already been working on "contingency planning" to counter the effect of the laws passing and he would be announcing tougher security measures "when appropriate".
