World War II bomb found in Sydney Harbour

An unexploded World War II bomb was found in Sydney Harbour by two divers.

Diving instructor Tony Strazzari and his friend Paul Szerenga were under water at Jones Bay, near Pyrmont, yesterday morning when they discovered the munition.

After they alerted police, officers set up an exclusion zone in a nearby park as military experts were called to the scene.

Mr Strazzari said he and his mate were “poking about” on the harbour floor when he felt a heavy object and pulled it out.

Concerned a boat anchor could disturb the 40cms-long device, he brought it to the surface inside his diving gear.

A spokesman for NSW police said the bomb was “unable to be detonated” and not a risk for the public.

Mr Strazzari said friends judged it to be a three-inch mortar shell.

Military personnel took it away in the afternoon.
