Second Victorian man sentenced to community service over 'sickening' kangaroo bashing and shooting

A Victorian man who shot and bashed three kangaroos to death and then posted footage of the attack to Facebook has been sentenced to community service, after his accomplice received a similar sentence.

The 22-year-old Goroke man has been ordered to perform 175 hours of community service, after the three eastern grey kangaroos were killed near the regional city of Horsham in November 2014.

He had pleaded guilty to five charges, being destroying protected wildlife, hunting protected wildlife, aggravated cruelty to an animal and two counts of beating an animal.

His accomplice, a 20-year-old Camberwell man, was sentenced in February to 175 hours of community service and fined $1800 for his role.

In the Horsham Magistrates Court today, magistrate Gregory Robinson described footage of the killing as "sickening".

"The animals were defenceless and your conduct was cowardly, indecent and inhumane," he said.

The magistrate also ordered the destruction of the two firearms used in the offence.

Katie Knight, a senior compliance officer at Victoria's Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), said she hoped the penalties sent a strong message.

"These cruel acts involved protected wildlife and caused needless suffering to three eastern grey kangaroos," she said.

"DELWP will pursue those who break Victoria's native wildlife protection laws."
