Tasmania Police deem security threat against University of Tasmania staff and students to be fake

Tasmania Police has analysed a threat made to staff and students at the University of Tasmania (UTAS), finding it to not be credible.

Commander Glenn Frame said Tasmania Police did "not consider the threat to be genuine" and that there was no "risk to staff and students".

"We have been liaising with UTAS on this matter and we can reassure students and staff that they can continue to go about their business," he said.

"As the safety of the community, students and staff is a priority, we had deployed police resources to UTAS campuses as a precaution and for reassurance while an assessment was undertaken. Those resources will now be withdrawn."

Earlier today, the University of Tasmania issued a general security alert after a threat was made to the safety of students and staff overnight.

The threat was described as “general in nature” and the university stated there was no direct threat to any specific campus.

"Late last night the University of Tasmania was made aware of a threat to the safety of students and staff and is working with Tasmania Police," the university said in a statement posted to Facebook.

"Police have been notified, and investigations are ongoing."

Students who wished to remain home today have been informed they will not be penalised.

It is believed the threat may have come from an anonymous post made to notorious online community 4Chan at 8pm last night, which has since been taken down.

"Don't go to Tas Uni (University of Tasmania, Australia Tomorrow)," a post to an online board read.

"Im going to turn off my internet and leave so the cops dont get me [sic]."

One student commented on the university's announcement claiming to have been removed from the library in the early hours of this morning.

"That must have been why I got kicked out of the library at 1am," they wrote.

"Safe policy UTAS kicking a young lady out in the middle of the night."

The alert follows a similar one issued by the University of New South Wales yesterday.
