Two women found dead in Victoria's high country

Two women have died whilst hiking in a remote part of Victoria's high country.

Two other hikers discovered the bodies near Cleve Cole Hut at Lendenfeld Point and called triple zero about 12.50pm today.

Uniform officers, along with the Search and Rescue Squad and Air Wing, began the hours-long journey to the isolated scene near Nelse, east of Falls Creek.

Police said they were yet to formally identify the two women but they are believed to be aged in their 20s or 30s.

They may have been in the area to hike and camp.

"Police are appealing for information from the public to assist in identifying those involved as we are not aware of any current missing person reports," Victoria Police said tonight.

Due to the conditions and isolated location, police will camp at the scene overnight.

It is expected the bodies will be removed from the scene tomorrow.

At this stage the deaths appear non-suspicious, police said.

Police earlier stressed the operation had no connection to the search for alleged killer Dezi Freeman.
