A group of teenagers is believed to be responsible for a grass fire that was dangerously close to homes in the Adelaide suburb of Mawson Lakes.

The blaze is understood to have been lit before 6pm yesterday, with strong winds propelling the fire along a kilometre of the rail line before firefighters took control, preventing any injuries or damage to homes.

"For somebody to call and say, 'Hey, there's smoke right behind your house,' that's pretty scary," local resident Sanath Munasinghe said.

Witnesses have told 9News they saw a group of teenagers running from the area after the blaze erupted.

"The engine driver who called the fire department had seen a bunch of kids running from here, so I hope they catch them and give them the right punishment," Munasinghe said.

South Australia Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said an investigation is underway to find those responsible.
