An air and water search is set to resume for a 52-year-old man believed to have been swept off rocks in Sydney's southeast in heavy seas that continue to pound the coast.

The man's wife raised the alarm after he set out take photos at Little Bay early yesterday and never came home.

The search was suspended on Sunday night and scheduled to resume at 9am today.

The man was last seen wearing a blue jacket with red stripes and dark long pants.

It was a busy weekend along Australia's east coast for marine rescuers, with a rock fisherman drowning after he was swept into the water at Merry Beach on the New South Wales south coast on Saturday.

Two men were rescued from their overturned boat about 2km off Wanda Beach, near Cronulla in Sydney's south on Saturday night.

Heavy seas are expected to continue to pound the coast, with the Bureau of Meteorology issuing strong wind warnings in New South Wales, Victoria and parts of Queensland for today.
