Scrutiny takes a break during campaign

Voters won't get to see new reports into wasteful government spending on advertising or the misuse of credit cards by bureaucrats before the July 2 election.

The auditor-general was due to release at least 14 reports over the next two months.

But with the dissolution of parliament ahead of the July 2 federal election the auditor-general cannot present audit reports for tabling.

"As such, no audits will be tabled until after a new parliament is formed," the independent watchdog told AAP on Tuesday.

One of the reports due in May related to advertising campaigns run by departments of education, immigration and Treasury.

Another report examines the use of credit cards by officials in the immigration department, Fair Work Ombudsman and the Australian Public Service Commission.

Other reports will look at the awarding of funding under the mobile black spot program, the army helicopter rollout, health care in onshore immigration detention and passenger screening at domestic airports.
