If Newspoll was replicated at next election government would be decimated

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has become the captain of a sinking ship, according to the latest Newspoll.

Today, the government has been given its first glimpse into the minds of voters, following last week's historic double spill and leadership coup.

And the outlook is grim for the government.

The poll, published in the Australian, shows popular support for the Coalition has crashed to its lowest levels in a decade.

In the Primary vote, the Coalition has slumped four points, to trail Labor 33 to 41 - while the Opposition has enjoyed a 6 percent hike.

On a two-party preferred basis, the Coalition trails Labor 44 to 56.

And for the first time in three years, Bill Shorten has become the preferred Prime Minister.

He's leading 39 to 33 over Mr Morrison.

In the previous Newspoll, Malcolm Turnbull was leading 44 to 32.

Today, re-installed Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said the results of the Newspoll were not surprising.

"The Australian people are not happy about the events of last week, we get that," he told the ABC.

"We now move forward under a new generation of leadership."

If the new Prime Minister had any intention of calling an early election, that idea will be gone.

If today's results were replicated at a general election, the government would be decimated.
