School funding has been dumped from the agenda of the meeting between Prime Minister Tony Abbott and state and territory leaders.

Premiers and chief ministers will be in Canberra on Friday for the Council of Australian Governments meeting.

AAP understands school funding has been dumped from the COAG agenda.

At the last COAG meeting in December, the leaders agreed to discuss school funding at their April meeting, the communique says.

Australian Education Union president Angelo Gavrielatos called on Mr Abbott to explain why he doesn't want to discuss the matter.

"State premiers who have signed Gonski agreements with the federal government must make sure that this issue is discussed at COAG and the government commits to six years of Gonski funding," he said.
