Consumers are being warned to keep an eye out for a new chatbot scam impersonating Australian supermarket giant Woolworths.

The scam acts as an online chat assistant, tricking shoppers into believing they have won a prize such as a Woolworths store credit or gift card.

It claims to give shoppers the chance to score even bigger prizes from the fake Woolworths "interactive prize universe".

NSW Police notified Australians of the scam today, identified by Scamwatch, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's scam watchdog.

"Do not provide your address or credit card details," NSW Police said via Facebook.

"You will not receive the prize or gift voucher."

Scamwatch has advised consumers to be wary of disclosing personal information such as bank account details, passwords and credit card numbers online.

"Unexpected prize and lottery scams work by asking you to pay some sort of fee in order to claim your prize or winnings from a competition or lottery you never entered," Scamwatch said via their website.

"The prize you have 'won' could be anything from a tropical holiday to electronic equipment such as a laptop or a smartphone, or even money from an international lottery."

To put it simply, if you haven't entered a competition, you can't win, Scamwatch says.

If you think you've been scammed, report it to the ACCC's Scamwatch.
