Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar has faced the wrath of the internet after accidentally confusing British musician Boy George with George Michael's passing.

The former Buffy star was metaphorically slayed on Twitter after posting a heartfelt message in memory of the Culture Club singer just hours after news broke of George Michael's untimely death.

"Do you really want to hear me? I guess you do 2016", the actress wrote using the hashtag ripboygeorge.

"I was truly one of your biggest fans."

Within seconds of her post going live, fans and others alike, let Gellar in on her mistake.

"Psst it was George Michael", Twitter user Kathryn Williams wrote.

Another user, Scott Bryan simply wrote: "wrong guy".

Gellar has since returned to Twitter to correct her unfortunate gaffe.

"Just as sad when you get the correct information - #ripGeorgeMichael,"she wrote.

"Thank you to everyone who corrected me – it's still so sad."

British pop singer George Michael, who rose to fame with the band Wham! and sold more than 100 million albums in his career, died over the Christmas period, his publicist has confirmed. He was 53.

The exact circumstances of his death are not yet known however police confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances, BBC reports.

The British star was in the process of releasing a documentary film, Freedom.
