Flu patient who didn’t know she had given birth wakes from coma

A Victorian flu patient who did not know she gave birth after being put in a coma is now awake and is a stable condition.

Doctors were forced to deliver 33-year-old Sarah Hawthorn's baby due to health risks from her Influenza A in August, leaving her completely unaware she had already given birth.

The family confirmed the mother has since woken from her coma  and her baby boy is "fit and healthy."

"After three months in intensive care, Sarah’s condition has improved and she is now stable," the Hawthorn family said in a statement.

"It has been a big journey for our family.

We've been overwhelmed by the generosity of the community, and all the kind wishes we received.

"We would like to thank everyone at The Alfred and especially the team in ICU for their dedicated care."

At the time, immunisation expert Professor Paul Van Buynder said Ms Hawthorn was lucky her son was able to survive.

Professor Van Buynder added that more needed to be done to ensure pregnant women were vaccinated.
