Same-sex civil unions set to return to Queensland

Civil unions for same-sex couples are expected to be reintroduced in Queensland on state parliament's penultimate sitting day of the year.

The former Liberal National Party government scrapped the state-sanctioned ceremonies in 2012, but Labor earlier this year reintroduced legislation to restore them.

Parliament is expected to debate and vote on the legislation today - its second last sitting day for the year.

Opposition MPs have been given a free vote on the issue, meaning the laws are likely to pass easily given government MPs will vote in favour of them as per party policy.

Former attorney-general Jarrod Bleijie, who was behind scrapping civil unions, has since indicated he will support their reintroduction, as have other LNP MPs who had previously opposed civil unions.

The government will also introduce legislation to make non-lethal strangulation a criminal offence as it continues its crackdown on domestic violence.

Meanwhile, the opposition is expected to continue to pursue the government over the future of embattled Police Minister Jo-Ann Miller, who narrowly survived a no confidence in parliament last night.
