Ex-AFL star Sam Fisher charged with trafficking large amounts of drugs across Australia

A high-profile former AFL player has been accused of trafficking large amounts of illicit drugs across Australia after police raided his Melbourne home.

Retired St Kilda defender Sam Fisher is being held in police custody after he was arrested at his property on Bay Road in Sandringham yesterday morning.

Police allegedly found drugs, including ice and a GHB precursor, at the property and seized a Mercedes-Benz, which they allege is the proceeds of crime.

Police allege Fisher, 39, is behind a large package of drugs seized in Western Australia on April 20.

The parcel allegedly contained about 1kg of ice and 84g of cocaine concealed inside a kitchen appliance, which had allegedly been sent from Melbourne.

Earlier that day, WA Police also seized a parcel containing $129,000, which was directed to be sent to a Melbourne address.

"Police will allege that drugs of dependence were regularly being concealed in white goods and sent from Melbourne to Perth," a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

Police have advised their investigation into the alleged drug trafficking is ongoing.

Fisher was yesterday charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of illicit drugs.

Victoria Police's Detective Inspector Craig Darlow said the police investigation had yielded "a remarkable result".

"This is a warning that regardless of where you are or where how you operate, we will target those involved in the manufacture and trafficking of illicit drugs and hold them to account," he said.

Fisher's case went before Melbourne Magistrates' Court last night, with his lawyer appearing without the former footballer.

The matter was adjourned until August and Fisher remains in custody.

An All-Australian defender, Fisher played 228 games for St Kilda between 2004 and 2016.
