Salim Mehajer in altercation with prison guard

Salim Mehajer will spend two weeks in segregation after an alleged altercation with a prison guard.

The 32-year-old allegedly grabbed the wrist of a guard at Cooma Jail, 410 kilometres south west of Sydney, on Friday.

“The inmate has been placed on a 14-day segregation order,” a Corrective Services NSW spokeswoman told 9NEWS.

The disgraced businessman has been serving an 11-month sentence at the New South Wales correctional facility for electoral fraud.

He was found guilty of 77 charges of rigging the 2012 Auburn council election.

Mehajer was elected to council six years ago with less than 10 percent of the formal vote.

He issued a “heartfelt apology” in court revealing he had suffered significant pain over the conviction.

“I wasn’t intending to rig the election to get in but my actions were negligent I believe. Reckless.”

The businessman also revealed he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and at least five of his sisters had suggested he seek help prior to this year.

“The wedding, first of all, was when they first thought ‘you seriously have issues’,” he said.

His lawyer argued the illness would make a prison term more onerous on him, suggesting any sentence should be kept short.

Mehajer received a maximum two-year four-month sentence with a non-parole period of 11 months in June.
