Sailors acquitted of raping a colleague with a rubber chicken during hazing incident

Two sailors have been found not guilty of raping a colleague with a rubber chicken.

A court martial found able seamen Jonathan Walter and Mitchell Summers innocent of all charges relating to the alleged assault and rape of a sailor, who cannot be named, aboard HMAS Newcastle in 2011.

Two others, able seamen Rohan Angre and Michael Thompson, admitted to hog-tying and indecently assaulting the sailor.

They pleaded guilty to multiple charges of forcible confinement and indecent assault.

Angre and Thompson are now awaiting details of their punishment.

All four were acquitted of the most serious charge, involving allegations of sexual intercourse without consent.

The victim told the court-martial hearing in September of a brutal hazing ritual in which he alleged he was smeared with Deep Heat and Vegemite before being raped with a rubber chicken.

He was left with burns to his body and genitals from the liniment, he told the court-martial.

After details of the alleged behaviour on board HMAS Newcastle came out, then-navy chief Vice Admiral Ray Griggs called for sailors to speak out if they know of other misbehaviour.

Further allegations were raised relating to incidents on HMAS Melbourne in 2009.

Defence said on Thursday two other Navy members had now been charged relating to those allegations.
