Authorities warning two children's products could cause severe injury or death

A safety warning has been issued for two baby products that could cause severe injuries or even death.

The ACCC is investigating the safety of aftermarket children's car seat head straps and baby bottle self-feeding devices following reports of consumer safety concerns.

Aftermarket children's car seat head straps are designed to fit across a child's forehead to position their head within a car seat.

The regulator is concerned the product may increase the risk of spinal injuries and potential death in the event of a car accident.

The item also poses the possible risk of suffocation or strangulation should the strap slip or drop around a child's mouth or neck.

The ACCC is also probing baby bottle self-feeding devices, which fall into two categories - self-feeding pillows and hands-free baby bottle holders.

Both types may cause babies to choke as they may be unable to regulate the flow of liquid, and may also increase the risk of smothering if the baby's head moves.

"The ACCC is investigating the safety of both of these products to determine if they will or may cause injury to any person, and the extent to which regulatory action is needed to prevent their supply or mitigate safety risks," the regulator's Deputy Chair Catriona Lowe said.

"Aftermarket children's car seat head straps are marketed as a support for sleeping children, but the safety warning notice issued about these products warns about the possible risk that in motor vehicle accidents they may cause severe head, neck, and spinal cord injuries.

"Baby bottle self-feeding devices are designed to position bottles so liquid can flow into infants' mouths without the assistance of a caregiver, which the safety warning notice warns may increase the possible risk of suffocation, aspiration pneumonia, choking or ear infection."

While there have been no reported injuries or deaths related to the products in Australia there have been fatalities in the UK and US.

Once investigations into the products are completed, the ACCC will provide recommendations to the Assistant Treasurer, including on whether further action is needed to prevent supply or mitigate the possible safety risks.

Consumers are urged to conduct a risk assessment and take any action necessary to address any safety issues.
