Nick Xenophon has called on the major political parties to commit to closing the gender pay gap in the South Australian public service.

The SA-BEST leader says the gap is currently about 15 per cent, with a 2016 state government report finding men were paid up to $43,000 a year more than women.

"We need to close this gap as a priority and ensure that South Australian female public servants, and indeed all female employees, are not undervalued and underpaid," Mr Xenophon said on Thursday.
