Independent Senator Nick Xenophon is set to announce his candidates for the South Australian election in March.

Senator Xenophon says the selection process will be finalised over the next few days with those chosen to be named by the end of the month.

He's told ABC radio in Adelaide the exercise has been thorough with both a nomination committee and selection panel involved.

Exactly which seats the party, known as SA Best, will target is yet to be disclosed.

But given the performance of Senator Xenophon's party at the last federal election, it could be in the running to win some lower house seats and secure representation in the upper house.

Until recently it held one upper house seat but John Darley quit after a disagreement with Senator Xenophon over Mr Darley's decision to back the Labor government's voting reform legislation.

He continues to sit in the parliament as an independent and is not due to stand for re-election until 2022.

At last year's federal election the Nick Xenophon Team picked up one lower house seat and increased its representation in the Senate to three.
