A worker at the Royal Adelaide Hospital building site is in a critical condition after receiving crushing injuries in an accident.

The man, in his 50s, was working on an elevated platform on Thursday morning when the accident occurred.

Safework SA executive director Bryan Russell says inspectors are at the North Terrace site and he understands the accident has shut down work on the site.

Health Minister Jack Snelling said he would meet the builder later on Thursday to investigate the incident, the latest of several at the hospital site.

"The government expects the site to be a safe worksite," he told reporters.

"We don't expect, at any stage, corners to be cut."

Construction workers walked off the site in June after a load of steel, being moved by a tower crane, came free and fell to the ground.

More than 1000 workers are employed at the site, which operates 24 hours a day.
