Intensive search for missing WA man ends

The intensive search for a 65-year-old dementia sufferer who has been missing from his Perth home for almost a week has been called off but will resume if fresh leads emerge, police say.

The last confirmed sighting of grandfather Ian Collett was on Saturday as he walked along Albany Highway at Mount Cooke, near Jarrahdale on the city's southeastern fringe.

Police spoke on Friday with two women who they believed may have had crucial information to help find Mr Collett, but that lead turned out to be a dead end.

The search had involved SES volunteers, police on horseback and on foot, and all-terrain vehicles.

WA Police Acting Inspector Darryl Brandis told reporters that officers and detectives were still sifting through information at Mundijong Police Station that may provide a breakthrough.

A strong cold front overnight brought heavy rain and damaging winds.

Acting Inspector Brandis said on Thursday he was concerned for Mr Collett, who would be weak and need urgent medical attention.

Mr Collett has connections to Mount Barker and Albany, and it is believed he may have been trying to reach the regional towns.
