What we know about the Salt Creek case

WHAT WE KNOW:

* A 60-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to seven charges over the alleged attack on two female backpackers.

* The accused is alleged to have used a hammer and a knife in the February attack at the remote Salt Creek in SA's Coorong National Park.

* The charges include attempted murder, aggravated kidnapping and indecent assault.

SALT CREEK AND THE COORONG:

* Salt Creek is in the heart of the national park, about 200km southeast of Adelaide.

* Sweeping sand dunes shelter a string of saltwater lagoons from the Southern Ocean within the park.
