Weatherill to lobby Turnbull on Arrium

South Australia's premier will lobby Malcolm Turnbull to provide assistance for troubled steel producer Arrium when the prime minister visits Adelaide.

Jay Weatherill says he will seek a shared commitment to Arrium, which has flagged a $60 million shortfall in the funding required to operate its Whyalla plant.

The premier will also raise cuts to hospital funding, the future submarines contract and Commonwealth funding for major projects when the pair meet on Tuesday night.

Mr Weatherill has outlined a number of priority projects, including a new $280 million health research centre, which he hopes to pitch to Mr Turnbull.

"He must be getting to an advanced stage in his budget deliberations in preparation for an election, whenever that might be," Mr Weatherill told reporters on Monday.

"I regard this as probably one of the more important meetings I've had with him."

Industry Minister Christopher Pyne has said that any Commonwealth support for Arrium, which is grappling with low commodity prices and cheap steel imports, will be conditional on structural reform.

He has announced an urgent inquiry into alleged dumping of cheap Chinese steel in Australia, which could result in duties being applied to such products.

The closure of Arrium's Whyalla plant would result in the loss of about 1000 jobs and also risk a flow-on to thousands more across the region.

Mr Turnbull is expected to be in Adelaide for several days and will address a business lunch on Thursday.
