Rail and road restrictions have been lifted north of Adelaide after two people died in a crash between a car and a freight train.

The Pacific National train was travelling south towards Adelaide when it collided with a Ford four-wheel drive at a level crossing just south of Mallala on Thursday afternoon.

The car was pushed some distance along the track after the impact.

The 73-year-old man driving the 4WD and his 66-year-old female passenger were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigations continue into the incident, which took South Australia's 2020 road toll to 19, compared with 17 at the same time last year.
