Top SA surgeon accused of slapping nurse

A leading South Australian surgeon is being investigated over a claim she slapped a nurse in front of a patient.

Gynaecologist Professor Margaret Davy, the head of surgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, says she is flabbergasted by the suggestion of any wrongdoing and denies any knowledge of the incident.

"I strongly deny any wrongdoing," she told the Adelaide Advertiser.

Health Minister Jack Snelling has confirmed that a formal investigation is underway into what he says is a serious allegation.

"If found to be true, I would expect appropriate disciplinary action to be taken," he said.

The Advertiser reported that Prof Davy has taken extended leave while the investigation takes place.

In 2002, Prof Davy was awarded the Order of Australia (AM) for services to Women's Health.
