By 1pm it had climbed to the predicted 41 degrees.

BOM spokesman Pete Clegg told AAP it is the warmest December day in Perth since December 31, 2012 when the mercury reached 42.1 degrees.

It would also be the first time in three years Perth had two days of more than 40 degrees in December.

Elsewhere in Western Australia temperatures are even higher, with predictions the mercury could hit a scorching 45 degrees by 3pm in Marble Bar, in the state's Pilbara region.

The heat will continue in Perth on Tuesday, with 37 degrees forecast, before a more pleasant 32 degrees on Wednesday.
