A man has been charged with arson for allegedly setting fire to the unit of a man he knew in Adelaide.

The fire took hold of the unit on the ground floor of a three-storey block in suburban Hawthorn just before 10am on Tuesday, police say.

The man living in the unit was not home at the time but other residents in the block were evacuated from the building, with none reporting injuries.

Police investigating the blaze, which was deemed suspicious, said a 40-year-old Port Adelaide man had been charged with arson and acts to endanger life.

They said the accused and the occupant of the unit knew each other and the attack was not believed to be random.

The charged man was refused police bail and was expected to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
