Support mining workers: SA climate groups

The South Australian government must do more to help unemployed mining industry workers find clean energy jobs, climate change groups and unions say.

Groups including the Conservation Council SA and the state's Australian Services Union branch say renewable energy jobs for struggling mining industry workers must be an integral part of the government's climate change strategy set to be released in December.

"Change is coming rapidly for workers in high-carbon industries... We need a just transition that ensures workers are supported," ASU SA branch secretary Joseph Scales said on Friday.

More than 400 jobs will go when Alinta Energy closes its Port Augusta power stations and Leigh Creek coalmine as early as March next year.
