Storage battery trial for SA solar homes

Storage batteries will be trialled in solar homes in Adelaide's north in a bid by SA Power Networks to avoid building new powerlines.

About 100 Salisbury households will be able to buy or rent heavily-discounted batteries to store solar power over the next three years.

The batteries usually cost more than $10,000 but eligible residents will pay about $3600.

SA Power Networks says participating households will save at least $500 a year.

If successful, the trial, beginning next month, could replace a $3 million upgrade to existing infrastructure in the area.

Non-solar homes can take part and SA Power Networks will assist with installation at a market price.
