South Australians who have died while homeless will be remembered in a ceremony in Adelaide.

Members of welfare groups and the public will gather in Victoria Square on Friday to read poems and release white balloons, in remembrance of those who died without permanent shelter.

Homelessness SA's deputy chair Tracy Ingram says events like this are important in raising awareness and informing the public of the broader issues surrounding homelessness.

"Homelessness could be people couch surfing, sleeping rough and people living in transitional housing," she said.

"The general community wouldn't think a person is homeless if they were sleeping on the floor in someone's lounge room, but we put that name on it."

According to Homelessness Australia figures, there are about 6000 homeless people in SA.
