An operation to retrieve the body of a South Australian father is set to resume in waters off the Eyre Peninsula after he was swept off rocks along with his young daughter.

Emergency services rushed to the area just after 1.30pm yesterday, conducting a search by land, air and sea, after reports the pair had been swept into the water at Cape Carnot on the Eyre Peninsula.

The search operation, led by South Australian police and the SES, were able to retrieve the body of a five-year-old girl yesterday.

Despite that, fading light conditions mean rescuers were unable to retrieve the body of the girl's 35-year-old father.

It is believed the pair had been sightseeing at Cape Cornot when they were swept into the water by rough surf conditions, which the tourist location is known for.

The retrieval operation will resume this morning at first light and Port Lincoln police will prepare a report for the coroner.
