Police withdraw hundreds of offences after South Australian speed camera maintenance bungle

South Australian police have cancelled 56 suspended expiation notices and withdrawn more than 150 matters before the court after a review into the handling of infringements found by one speed camera.

The camera at Leawood Gardens on the South Eastern Freeway is said to be "perfectly accurate", but the way in which data is processed for use by the courts is not sufficient.

"It needs to be strongly reinforced that SA Police are absolutely confident the camera was and is operating as per its specifications with no issues relative to the technology of the camera," said Assistant Commissioner Ian Parrott.

"The matters cancelled are done so purely from a procedural process perspective and not regarding the capabilities of the camera."

Between 3 April 2019 to 2 December 2020, more than 10,600 expiation notices were issued from this camera.

Police say for data from the camera to be used in court, the camera must be tested every 28 days.

The camera was tested every 28 days, but police did retain the records of these tests in a manner which could be accepted by the courts.

Assistant Commissioner Parrott said it was important to note why the camera was installed in that particular location.

"We also cannot lose sight of the fact that this camera was installed as a critical factor in addressing the issues of speeding heavy vehicles descending down the South Eastern Freeway into the city area where people have died," he said.

"The camera was installed after the Coroner's recommendations to directly address this issue."
