Social worker at odds with inquest witness

A senior Families SA social worker has denied impeding efforts by Chloe Valentine's grandmother to remove the girl from her drug-using teenage mother.

Belinda Valentine on Friday told the inquest into Chloe's death that she had repeatedly contacted Families SA with concerns about the girl's filthy, transient and unsafe living conditions.

Ms Valentine said she offered to take her granddaughter into her care after Chloe's mother was subjected to domestic abuse, but claimed she was told by senior social worker Leanne Stewart: "you have no right to take Chloe anywhere".

Recalled to give evidence on Monday, Ms Stewart denied the conversation took place.

Asked repeatedly if she had lied to the inquest, Ms Stewart said she had been completely honest at all times when giving evidence.

She also denied telling Ms Valentine that she wouldn't support any court applications to remove the girl.

"I completely disagree with that," she said.

"I have no reasons to lie with this.

"I don't know whether ... (Ms Valentine) perhaps felt there was something else she could have done. She may have been confused."

Chloe died of massive head injuries after being forced to ride a motorbike that repeatedly crashed over a three-day period in the backyard of her Adelaide home in January 2012.

Ms Valentine's daughter, Ashlee Polkinghorne, and Polkinghorne's then-partner are in jail after pleading guilty to Chloe's manslaughter through criminal neglect.

The inquest has heard Chloe endured chronic neglect at the hands of her mother, who became pregnant at 15, but was never removed by child protection authorities.

A number of social workers have given evidence about the flawed processes used by Families SA in the years leading to Chloe's death.

The inquest is continuing.
