Six sperm whales dead after beaching themselves on Yorke Peninsula, South Australia

Six sperm whales have died after beaching themselves on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia.

National Park staff rushed to Ardrossan beach, about 150km north west of Adelaide, after the pod of six whales were spotted beached in the shallows about 50m offshore early this morning.

Authorities have now confirmed all six whales have died.

Male sperm whales can grow up to 18m in length and weigh more than 45t while females can reach up to 11m and almost 15t.
