SA hit by four fires as temperatures rise

Four bushfires have sparked across South Australia, defying last month's end to the official fire risk season.

Fires broke out in the Adelaide Hills, on the Fleurieu Peninsula, on Kangaroo Island and in the mid north amid unseasonably warm weather today.

At Mt George, in the Adelaide Hills, a fire burnt towards homes before being contained.

At Goyder, in the mid north, a stubble blaze destroyed 50 hectares with fire breaks expected to bring it under control.

The other fires - near Mt Compass on the Fleurieu Peninsula and at Western River on Kangaroo island - were not a risk to people or property, the Country Fire Service said.

By this afternoon, fire crews were mopping up Mt Compass.

Some of the fires were thought to be burn-offs that reignited or got out of control.

They came as a severe bushfire risk was declared in four SA districts - the northwest pastoral, eastern Eyre Peninsula, the mid-north and on Yorke Peninsula.

Temperatures across SA rose to the mid to high 20s and winds gusted to more than 50km/h today.

A cold front was expected to move across the state late in the day bringing some showers.

Late today, the CFS said it was also responding to a fire at Paracombe in the Adelaide Hills.

Residents were advised to activate bushfire survival plans.
